Riddell, the official equipment partner of USA Football, has been a big part of this movement with their “Smarter Football” initiative. This year, the program expanded to “18 In 18” equipment grants to reflect the uniform number worn by future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, who now serves as Riddell’s Strategic Advisor and Brand Ambassador.
There's a new "player" on the Lakewood Ranch High School football team this season. The new Riddell Insite "Smart" helmet is made by their ITT Technology Center and is on the head of every player on the football team this season.
"You'll see nearly half of the NFL players wearing the SpeedFlex Precision Helmet this season, said Thad Ide. Ide is the Senior VP of Research & Product Development for Riddell, which is a company that creates custom-fit helmets tailored to an athlete's head shape and size.
The Ecole Secondaire Franco Cite Patriotes has won a grant through the Riddell 18 in 18 Smarter Football Program. Franco-Cite was one of 1400 applicants from across North America who applied and the West Nipissing high school is the lone Canadian school to get the grant.
It was hard to tell if Rogersville Middle School's football players were more thrilled with the special delivery they received on Aug. 24 or by the man who delivered it. The Warriors were chosen specifically by legendary quarterback Peyton Manning to receive an equipment grant from Riddell Sports including uniforms, pads, tackling dummies, a player hydration system and 40 "InSite" smart helmets that record hits.
Tom Lenarz, director of Cloquet Youth Football, said the funds from USA Football will go toward the purchase of new Riddell helmets. “We are excited to be able to use this money to put our kids in newer and safer equipment,” Lenarz said.
The Riddell Insite Helmets are equipped with five sensors: one at the front, the top, the back and one on each side of the helmet. Those sensors detect head impact and allow the coaches and athletic trainer to monitor their players.
Jerry Appleton, president of the group, said the money is targeted for Riddell Speedflex Helmets, which are “state-of-the art in technology that provides the safety advantages needed to help reduce concussions.”
Indiana's athletic department spent $130,000 on new football helmets Glass touts as the safest on the market. The Riddell SpeedFlex Precision-Fit helmets will be worn by every IU player this fall.
Gurley paid for the team to purchase new home and away uniforms. He didn’t stop there. Gurley also used his connections with Riddell — a football helmet and equipment company — to hook up the Vikings with state-of-the-art gear.
